Blog Action Day II

This is the second year I have written for Blog Action Day. This year Poverty is the main issue. I think there's a lot to write about it but let me just ask a "simple" question. We've heard a few times now that there's enough food to feed the whole world and there are enough resources to erradicate poverty. And my question is:

WHY IS TAKING US SO LONG?

WE ARE PART OF THE SOLUTION! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Penguins crossing

I'd say this is not the most common traffic sign that you would find on a road. Unless you are driving around New Zealand!

It's good to know that the penguins usually arrive back to the beach at 17:55h. That is the time to get home and relax for the night after swimming all day trying to find food. But before going to bed they seem to enjoy a chat with the other penguins of the colony - perhaps they are explaining to each other how the day went?

They're really cute animals and quite punctual too!

- What? No way! I'm sorry but it just doesn't appeal to me.
- Ok, what about a campervan?
- Well... if you had asked me this question some time ago then my answer would also have been no way, but now that I just had a great experience traveling for a few weeks in a great mobile home... I could even think about it.
- Good! My strategy seems to be working then!

Lucky and unlucky

You've been telling me about your experience in Africa and I realize once again that we're lucky and unlucky, all at the same time.

Changing the clocks

We decided to drop by the cinema and see what was on. There was a film that we felt like seeing. We had missed a show at 16:05h and the next one was at 18:20h so we would have to wait for a bit more than an hour. In the end, we decided to get the tickets and then go for a walk and maybe a drink.

We got the tickets. I don't usually check them but today I did, I don't know why. I saw "16:05" written on the tickets and I pointed it out to the girl behind the counter, assuming that she would realize quickly that there was a mistake, we were already too late for the early session. She gave us a very strange look, obviously she didn't understand what was wrong.

Suddenly the answer came to us.

- We forgot that the clocks changed last night!!!
- Oh, you're right! And what time is it now?
- 16:05!!!
- So... there's nothing wrong with the tickets!

We rushed to our seats and just as we sat down the opening credits appeared on the screen! I think it's the first time that I forgot to change the clocks but I'm glad that it's the first time that I checked the tickets at the cinema.

Procastination

A lot of kids tend to do their homework at the last minute, sometimes they finish writing when the teacher is at the door. Does this sound familiar?

Are adults much better? If we are taking a language course for example, how many times have we done our homework in advance? Or even better... how many times have we done our homework? Let's blame procastination!

Blog Action Day I

Before I started this blog I didn't know that there existed a Blog Action Day. I just found out a couple of days ago.

- And when is it?
- Today, October 15th!
- And what is it about?
- Bloggers around the world unite to put a single important issue on everyone's mind. This year the issue is... the environment! The idea is that every blogger posts about the environment.
- And what is the goal?
- To get everyone talking about a better future.

And now my question is... what am I going to write about?

I'll just say that we live in a 36.5 m² appartment. It's obvious that we don't have a lot of spare room, but we have our four distinct recycling bins. It's a matter of priorities! We do a few other things and I'm sure that we could do a lot more... but every little thing counts. Our flat is tiny but what's really important is our other home: the whole planet! It's much bigger and we need to keep it the way it is or even better.

It could have been worse!

He was getting all the equipment ready for his sailing trip. He ordered a special pair of trousers on the internet but they didn't arrive in time. The trip was over and he still didn't have any news about the trousers. In fact he had already forgotten about them but in the end they arrived, after four months! I wouldn't call that efficiency but I suppose it could have been worse!

Missing a plane

Missing a plane is not an experience that I would recommend! You feel pretty stupid when you are at the check-in desk and the man behind it says: "This flight is already closed". Hoping for a different answer you say: "Closed???" He doesn't react at all and just repeats the exact same words: "This flight is already closed."

It's not funny at all, especially when you've been queuing for a long time and you know that the plane is not going to take off for a while. The departure time is in 50 minutes and there's nothing you can do! The only option is trying to find (and of course pay for) another flight to get back to your home, sweet home!

Save the lollipop!

The little boy was playing while holding a lollipop. His father was beside him. Suddenly the kid lost his balance and fell down.

And what did he save? The lollipop, of course!

The kid made sure that the lollipop didn't touch the ground but I don't think that his father realized that. So maybe he had to throw it away anyway! No lollipop after all his effort!

You never know

I started this blog a month ago. I was not sure if I would even last a week! Let's see if I keep going for an other month!

Ode to my computer

You didn't turn on a few days ago
but I was hoping that was something small.
I brought you to the experts
but apparently there's no cure.
There's something that they could do
but they said it's too much hassle for a computer like you.

I just want to thank you all the time you spent on my desk
working more than anything else.
I really appreciate all you have done
sometimes until late and no rest at all.
I treated you as well as I could,
I hope you can say your life's been good.

Now it's time to say goodbye
I have to say I'll miss you for a long while.
Another one might replace you at some stage
but I will never forget the one that came first.
I'm kind of sad
but I suppose life is like that.
